This 8-session certificate program will explore the fundamental principles of corporate finance for professionals with little-to-no financial background. Participants will learn the basic tools and techniques of financial analysis, time value of money, capital budgeting, long-term financing, and risk and return. This program offers a practical, everyday approach to finance and how it affects both the individual and corporate environments.

Program Design
This program will consist of live, interactive online sessions between the facilitator and participants. Each session will examine case studies with breakout groups for hands on problem solving. Each session will build upon previous lessons.
Who should enroll?
This program is designed for anyone with little to no formal education or training in finance or accounting.
Program Schedule
Session One: The Financial Environment
In this session, you’ll gain an overview of financial markets and key institutions here in the United States as well as abroad. You’ll learn about interest rates and how they’re determined, the role of the U.S. Federal Reserve, and more.
Session Two: Financial Statements
In this session, you’ll learn how to read and interpret key financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, statements of cash flow, etc.
Session Three: Ratio Analysis
In this session, we’ll examine evaluation ratios and their importance in financial analysis. You’ll learn how they’re calculated, what they mean, and how they help you compare your organization’s performance to other organizations in your industry and the market overall.
Session Four: Time Value of Money (Part 1)
In this session, we’ll begin our exploration about the time value of money. We’ll examine present value vs. future value and how it applies to corporate finance as well as personal savings, such as saving for retirement, saving for college, paying a home mortgage, etc.
Session Five: Time Value of Money (Part 2)
This session will be a continuation of session four.
Session Six: Risk and Rates of Return
This session will explore a wide range of investment types and their associated risks and rewards.
Session Seven: Budgeting and Financial Evaluations
In this session, you’ll learn about budgeting and grasp various evaluation techniques. You’ll learn how to divide costs to fixed vs. variable, how to perform a Breakeven Analysis in sales vs. units, and how to complete a Sensitivity Analysis.
Session Eight: Financial Project
In this session, you’ll perform a comprehensive financial evaluation that puts your newfound understanding and skills to use. Your project will include the time value of money, risk and rates of return, budgeting/forecasting, and other analyses.
FAQs
What do I get for attending the Finance for Non-Finance Professionals program at PC?
First and foremost, you receive a great education, taught by Providence College faculty who are excited to teach professionals. Second, you gain a practical understanding of corporate finance and accounting that you can apply to your work (and personal life). Participants who complete the course will also receive a non-credit certificate from Providence College indicating their completion of the program.
What’s the time commitment?
The program will total 24 hours of instructional time, along with a suggested 1 hour for reading materials outside of class each week.
Do I have to attend all class sessions to receive my certificate?
You’ll get the most out of your certificate program if you attend all the sessions. However, in extenuating circumstances, we can provide a video recording of the missed session.
What are the logistics?
Classes are 100% virtual.
How much homework is involved?
Most of the faculty will send you important reading materials before their class to give you a basic foundation on which they build. This reading generally takes less than an hour and is optional, but helpful.
Am I graded?
This is a non-credit certificate program. Non-credit programs are not graded; they are given a pass/fail designation only.
Is this program eligible for tuition reimbursement?
In many cases, yes, depending on the employer. Many of our participants receive partial or full employer reimbursement. Alert us of this arrangement with your employer and, upon program completion, we’ll issue your pass/fail grade for reimbursement processing.
What does the program cost?
Take advantage of special pricing of $1,600 for the entire 8-week program.
Do I have to be accepted?
No! This is a non-credit program with open enrollment. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Your World-Class Instructor
John Kalian, CPA
Professor Kalian has been a Certified Public Accountant for nearly 35 years and is a former Controller and Chief Financial Officer for several organizations. He is currently the director of finance for Curamedix, a medical equipment distributor. He has taught accounting and finance courses at Providence College and Bristol Community College over a 20-year period. He has degrees in accounting and finance from Bryant University and has a Master of Business Administration from Providence College.
